Wits tells the story of Eddie, Amanda and Tyler, Black teenagers on the cusp of graduating high school, as they wait to hear if they’ve been admitted to a prestigious dance conservatory. The three seniors, with the Black community around them, grapple with the uncertainty of their futures. As their anxieties reach a fever pitch—brought on by their encounters with racial subjugation and classism—they are offered an escape from the crippling limitations of society: an opportunity to travel the stars with an extraterrestrial being. This dynamic, dance-driven narrative invites audiences to bear witness to a depth of soul and spirit that characterizes so many Black people in vibrant communities of color. The fears, hopes and dreams of these young Black artists soar through an infectious, otherworldly pop score, revealing a tomorrow of possibility and promise, their futures written in the stars.
