Untitled Cherry Orchard Musical is a feminist upending of Anton Chekhov’s Cherry Orchard. With a pop-driven score influenced by jazz, blues and folk music, Chekhov’s narrative is refocused on the three female protagonists: self-destructive matriarch Lyuba, her rebellious daughter Anya and her selfless stepdaughter Varya. Now, their home is a safehouse for migrant workers, but with financial disaster looming, the family must do everything in their power to stay afloat or risk homelessness for themselves and the chosen family they support. Set in early 20th century Russia—but with the old American tunes of financial crisis and the promise of freedom for some and not for others—Untitled Cherry Orchard Musical asks contemporary audiences to examine our own power structures and what we inherit. Can we take care of our own? Is there a revolution coming for us?
